Or helps manage files by compressing them easily. ZIP and UNZIP, compatible with PKZIP v2.04g, is built into ACZAR. Besides these main features, ACZAR offers a wide variety of helpful file and disk management functions. ACZAR supports all switches for McAfee's virus scanner program SCAN.EXE. ACZAR is NOT freeware nor public domain. ACZAR is shareware. ACZAR is copyrighted. CZAR Software retains ownership of all ACZAR copyrights. Page 3 ----------------------------------------------------- -------- Nowadays, many computer programs and data files are very large. Much disk space is required to store large files on hard drives or floppy disks. These large files require more time to transfer electronically from computer to computer. To somehow store these big files in reduced or compacted form would save disk space, time, and money. That is why there are several good compression and decompression programs like PKZIP, LHA, ARJ etc. These programs use mathematical compression algorithms that allow them to reduce the size of a computer program or data file to a fraction of the original size. Once these large computer programs are compressed, they can be transferred, for example, to electronic bulletin board systems. To use the computer programs and its data files, compressed files must be decompressed and returned to their original sizes. Moreover, compression is a convenient way to store files in compressed form on floppy disks. Otherwise, these big files would take-up precious disk space. Unfortunately, nearly all of the compression and decompression programs are difficult to use because they are command line driven. This is why CZAR Software designed ACZAR; to help manage these compression and decompression programs. You can use ACZAR as a Shell to manipulate files and directories, or you can use ACZAR's ability to take advantage of each switch in McAfee's virus scanner program SCAN.EXE. ============================================================== Features Page 4 -------- -------- ■ Zip & Unzip - ACZAR offers built-in ZIP and UNZIP including multi-volume support. This means that you do not need PKZIP or PKUNZIP to create or decompress ZIP files. ACZAR does this for you automatically. ■ Multi-Volume - The built-in multi-volume support is not 100% PKZIP compatible, but offers improved performance and security not found in the original PKZIP multi-volumes. Multi-Volumes are perfect for Backups with high compression. ■ Ease of use - The biggest concern for CZAR Software was that ACZAR should be very easy to use, yet extremely powerful in function. ACZAR IS easy to use and powerful at the same time. ■ Drag & Drop - ACZAR features Drag & Drop functions. This makes mouse users fly. You can use the Drag & Drop functions to edit, delete, copy, move, tag, view, compress, and decompress files or directories. ■ Fully mouse driven - Users can operate ACZAR with a mouse without ever using the keyboard. Users without a mouse can use hot-keys or cursor keys for speedy operations. ■ All major archives - All major archive file formats; supported ZIP, LZH, PAK, ARC, ARJ, SQZ ZOO, and HYP. ■ Supports SFX Files - ACZAR supports all self extracting files (SFX) for ZIP, ARJ, PAK, HYP, SQZ, and LZH, are supported by ACZAR. ■ Unlimited Viewing - ACZAR allows the viewing of archives within archives for un- limited levels deep. For example, view a ZIP file within an ARJ file etc. This is a powerful feature not found on any other Windows archive shell. Other archive shells delete or destroy the previously viewed file or can only view 2-3 levels deep; whereas, ACZAR does no harm to files and goes unlimited levels deep. ■ Run Files within - ACZAR can execute EXE, COM, or BAT archives files from within archives. This is great for checking out new files without having to decompress them. ■ Backup or Restore - Backup or Restore entire drives or directories using the most powerful compression functions of ZIP or ARJ. ■ Additional Support - Fine tune .EXE file compression programs such as DIET, PKLITE, and LZEXE by using all the switches they offer. ■ External Viewer - Use the built-in file viewer with full mouse support or any external file viewer of your choice. ■ Scan Archives - Look for viruses within archives or normal files. ■ Multi-Select - Tag as many files as you want and Compression instruct ACZAR to compress each file into a single archive. ■ Dual/Single Window - Switch between Dual windows for directories and files or single windows. This allows ACZAR to display and use more directories and files. Any operation that requires a target path, will be prompted for. If the target path does not exist, it will be created. ■ Extensive Switches - For the beginner, there is no need to set even one switch to successfully manage archives. Just use the default settings. For the "power-user", get almost everything out of each archive or virus scanner. There are extensive switch settings available for each archive. ■ Automatically - Unlike other archive shells, ACZAR locates archives searches all drives and directories in seconds automatically. There is no need to hassle with putting all files in the DOS PATH etc. ACZAR remembers the location of all the necessary archive files and how to use them wherever they are located. No need to change your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files. ■ Uses Internal - Uses internal file ID's to detect File ID's ZIP, ARJ, LZH, ARC, PAK, ZOO, SQZ, and HYP files. This permits the use if archives with different file extensions. ■ File and Disk - ACZAR has a complete file and disk Management management system built-in. For example, C:\TEMP\SETUP and press Enter.) - Follow the setup instructions ============================================================== General Mouse and Keyboard Operation Page 7 ------------------------------------ -------- ACZAR is fully mouse operational. This means, if you have a Microsoft Mouse or 100% compatible, you can operate ACZAR without ever touching the keyboard. However, if you do not have a mouse, you can still access functions very quickly by using hot-keys and short-cut-keys. Pressing the left mouse button while the mouse pointer is over a dialogue box or any menu item, will activate that specific function. Throughout this documentation, we will refer to this operation as "clicking" a specific dialogue box or item. The keyboard TAB key moves forward to the next menu or dialogue box. Likewise, pressing SHIFT+TAB will move backward to the previous dialogue box or menu item. Pressing the SPACE bar or ENTER will activate or check a dialogue item, or operation. Pressing the ESC key stops the current task and returns to the previous operation. The text within the box will be in a highlighted color. With the keyboard, move to the input-box by pressing TAB or SHIFT+TAB and press SPACE bar or ENTER to activate. The enter field within the box is now high- lighted with a brighte color. Any text that was in the enter field is also highlighted. If you press the left or right arrows at least once, the text will be shown in a normal color. If you press the DEL key or press any other letter key while the text is still highlighted, the text will be deleted. Pressing HOME will jump to the beginning of the text while END will jump to the end. Ctrl-Left or Ctrl-Right keys will jump to the next or previous word. You can scroll by page if you click between the scroll up arrow and the scroll down arrow. To select a specific item within the list- box, move the mouse pointer over the item and click the left mouse button. With the keyboard, use the Up and Down arrows to scroll through the items. Use the PageUp or PageDown keys, to scroll by page; HOME key to jump to the top item; END key to jump to the bottom item. Press the SPACE bar, or ENTER key to select an item. ============================================================== How to use ACZAR Page 8 ---------------- -------- At the main window you may enable the most important functions of ACZAR, and more. You can view, delete, copy, move, rename, compress, and decompress files; access the file and disk management functions, scan for viruses, run other programs, or get specific information about files and disk drives, and much more. The main window is divided into two major parts. The upper part is normally used for the source path, and the lower part is normally used for the target path. Although it does not matter if you use the upper part of the screen for your source path and the lower part of the screen for the target path or vice versa, it is a good idea to keep to the "natural" top-down perspective to minimize confusion. Note: If you use the "Dual/Single Windows" menu option in main menu OPTIONS, you will be prompted to enter a target path. Operations performed with source path functions are totally independent from target path functions and vice versa. This allows more freedom for specific functions such as file deletion, copying, moving etc. Some functions will place a file into the opposite window. For example, if you decompress a file in the Source Path, the decompressed files will appear in the Target Path. If you copy or move a file from the Target Path to the Source Path, the file will appear in the source window. Note: If the source and target paths are the same, certain functions will not be executed or may cause an error state/message, i.e., a file may not be copied over/ onto itself. ============================================================== Drag & Drop Page 9 ----------- -------- ACZAR offers Drag & Drop functions for mouse users. The ability to drag & drop an item simplifies many tasks like editing, deleting, copying, moving, tagging, decompressing, or compressing files. You can Drag & Drop Files or entire directories and subdirectories. The Drag & Drop functions can only be used with a mouse. To Drag & Drop a file or directory, follow the steps below: 1. Position your mouse pointer to the file or directory so that the highlighted bar points to the item you wish to use. 2. Press and hold the left mouse button. 3. While you are holding down the left mouse button, press the right mouse button. 4. A drag icon will appear. This represents either your file or directory. Keep the left and right mouse buttons pressed. 5. Once you see the black box, drag it down to the pushbuttons such as EDIT, DELETE, COPY, MOVE, TAG, DECOMPRESS, or COMPRESS. When you drag your file, or directory, over a pushbutton, you will see that pushbuttons are in inverse color. 6. Once you have selected a pushbutton, release the mouse buttons. The function of that specific pushbutton will be executed. If you have any ideas or suggestions on how you would like to use the Drag & Drop feature, please contact Thomas Jaeger, of CZAR Software. ============================================================== How to View a File Page 10 ------------------ -------- To view a file press ENTER, double click with the mouse on the file you would like to view, or drag the file onto the view button. ACZAR will detect if the file you would like to view is a text, ZIP, ARJ, LZH, PAK, ARC, ZOO, SQZ, or HYP file. ACZAR will also detect if it is a self-extracting (SFX) ZIP, ARJ, PAK, LZH, SQZ, or HYP file. ACZAR will automatically inform you if the file is a PKLITE, DIET, LZEXE, or a HAP file. ACZAR checks the internal header of each file in order to determine what type it is. ACZAR can view archives unlimited levels deep. For example, you could view a ZIP file within a ZIP file within an ARJ file etc. The only limit to view archives is the amount of free space left on your hard drive. ACZAR still detects what kind of archive it is (ZIP, ARJ, LZH, ARC etc.) even if you are viewing archives 20 levels deep or more. Unlike other archive shells, ACZAR does not destroy or corrupt any archives while viewing them. ============================================================== How to Change Directories ------------------------- To change directories, go to the Source or Target Directory list boxes (upper or lower left side of the main window) and press ENTER or double click with the mouse on the directory. In order to view subdirectories, just press ENTER or double click on the directory that contains subdirectories. ACZAR will then display the next level of subdirectories. ============================================================== How to Compress Directories Page 11 --------------------------- -------- To compress a directory do the following: - Click with the left mouse button on the directory in one of the directory list boxes. Keep the left mouse button pressed. - Press the right mouse button. Keep it pressed. You should see a black box. - Drag the black box down to the compress button and release both mouse buttons. - Enter a filename for the directory. Note: You can see the directory path you are about to compress on the top window line. If you would like to compress a directory including its subdirectories, you have to activate certain switches for that specific compression utility. For example, if you would like to compress a directory with its subdirectories using PKZIP, do the following: - Go into the SWITCHES main menu - Select ZIP Switches - Select ZIP Switches Part 1 - Activate the switches "STORE PATHNAMES" and "RECURS SUBDIRECTORIES". - Now you can compress a directory including its subdirectories using PKZIP v2.04g. ============================================================== Troubleshooting Page 12 --------------- -------- If you encounter any errors or erratic operations while using ACZAR, please call 915-595-8787 or call the support BBS at 915-595-8705. By reporting errors, you enable CZAR Software to make the necessary corrections; thereby, improving ACZAR. Command Line Switches Page 13 --------------------------------- -------- You can start ACZAR with additional command line switches. These command line switches offer additional functions that are normally not necessary. A special feature of ACZAR for Windows is that you do not need to run Windows first in order to start ACZAR. Just type ACZAR at the DOS prompt and Windows will be started with ACZAR automatically. Command line switches are used when you type ACZAR at the DOS prompt. What is shareware and how does it work Page 18 -------------------------------------------------- -------- Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to register it. Individual programs differ on the details of registration -- some request registration, while others require it. Some specify a maximum trial period. With registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using the software to an updated program with a printed manual. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For example, some authors require written permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is low, the prices are low, too.
